Spring to Fall - recipe
November I always consider the beginning of the "crazy" season, well that's how I look at it. Everyone is crazily trying to get their projects finished or in some cases, started and getting ready for our Christmas festivities. Although it is Spring in the southern hemisphere and fall in the northern, it reminds me of pumpkins - could be Halloween of course! Anyway, I must say that "pumpkin anything" is listed at the top of my favorites so I thought I'd share a couple of recipes.
Printing on Fabric makes beautiful gifts
My Printing on Fabric class begins this weekend so I thought I'd share with you one of the techniques I use printed fabric for - I have a sample exercise for you to try in class too, with step by step instructions for thread painting or you can use your own photo and I'll guide you.
People in Places
People in Places class is starting up very soon, and all are welcome! To me, the best quilts are those that are the Impressionist quilts - the quilts that depict one crystallized moment in time - whatever the subject may be, whether it's your cat jumping at a canary, your son skipping rocks, or even your daughter in an outrageous hat shop with that gleam in her eye. Come play with us and learn to make people in places, working through a couple of small projects, then continuing on to creating your own photo in fabric. If you can trace, you can do this class!
Journal Quilts
Journal quilts are usually a series of small quilts derived around a topic or theme or life experience or exploration of anything at all. Lily Kerns has a class starting this week Journal Quilts that gets you started on your first journal quilts or helps you progress if you have already begun the journey. I asked Lily how she got started.
Christmas in the Kitchen
Over the weekend I was looking over all the Christmas patterns. There are more than I thought! I'm rather fond of poinsettias and realize I have a number of patterns that have poinsettias in them.
Morning Glories applique quilt - a play with color
I've been looking at my "Glorious Morning" quilt and thinking it would look great in different colors. Since the morning glories on this pattern are appliqued, it would be so easy to audition various fabrics, but sometimes it is easier to figure it out first. Mostly I know morning glories in a blue-purple color, but I see there are many in shades of blue-blue, purple and pink. Even white ones. I decided to play a little with colors to see what I came up with. First, here is the original.
Inside the Board Bag
As you will have read from my last blog post, I've been updating the board bag and making myself a new tote in new colors. I'm really liking the combination. I do think the Amsterdam Star looks good in just 3 fabrics. What do you think?
Modern Look Tote for Quilting
Recently I've been working on my 'new-look' carryall board bag. I made a new front pocket using a different block and some fun modern looking colors.
A Different Approach on Purse Designing
Do you have a similar problem? My new leather wallet and my glasses case don't fit in my favorite purse that's great for walking. Another purse is too large and the straps are too short. Another is short of pockets and yet another is lacking design style. I'd love to have a whole wardrobe of beautiful purses, but...
How Many Variations can one simple block make?
I designed a block a number of years ago - I was working with 2 1/2" strips and would you believe the first quilt I made up using a pre-cut strip of fabrics I didn't like, but when put together using just four colored strips for each block, the design worked wonderfully and "Twisted Ribbons" was born.
