Friday Flower Buttercup
The real name for a buttercup is Ranunculus. The buttercup is known for its yellow color and it was believed once that its color came from butter - not true of course. I remember as a young girl rubbing buttercups on the palms of others and telling them if it left a yellow mark, it meant that person liked butter. I don't know where that notion came from, but after doing some research I had to giggle to myself when I read that this game wasn't just in my neighborhood, it appears it was quite commonly used all around the world in a similar way.
Friday Flower Hibiscus
This week's flower is Hibiscus. Hibiscus are known for their large trumpet-shaped blooms and attractive stamen which seems overly large for the flower. I did a little research to find out some facts about Hibiscus. Hibiscus has a less commonly known name of Rose Mallow. The flowers have five or more petals and they come in many colors of pink, red, orange, yellow and purple. Dried Hibiscus is edible and a delicacy of Mexico and tea is also made from this plant. Hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia and the State flower of Hawaii. There are actually two native Hibiscus plants of Hawaii but only one is named as the State flower.
Friday Flower Begonia
With over 1400 species, Begonia flowers come in many different colors and shapes but I think their most interesting part is their leaves. Many have leaves that are outlined in a reddish color and others have wonderful red designs in them. When doing a search online, I saw some pretty amazing leaves that I think would make great quilts.
Friday Flower Aster
I think the thing I love about Asters is they come in so many different colors. Lots of bright colors in fact. Because of all their bright colors I couldn't decide which color to use so I made my flower block using two shades of pink and two shades of purple. I didn't have a 'real' photo of asters so checked out the Wikipedia online for an image which I've shared here.
Friday Flower Hydrangea
This week's flower is a hydrangea. You most commonly see these flowers in blue but sometimes in a purplish pink shade, it depends on the soil type. If you see the blue flowers it is because they are growing in acidity soil. The following photo is one I found on wikipedia, but it reminds me of the hydrangeas I remember seeing in my music teacher's garden as a little girl.
Friday Flower Agapanthus
Agapanthus is a flower you see around in a lot of places. They are also know as African lilies and Liles of the Nile. I see them a lot in New Zealand, yet these photos were taken while visiting Temecula in Southern California.
Friday Flower Grape Hyacinth
I remember Grape Hyacinth popping up in early spring as a young girl. I loved these little flowers. I am not sure if it was their color (blue being my favorite), the tiny bundle of tightly packed flowers, their bell shape or the fact that they were a sure sign of spring.
Friday Flower Geranium
I was doing a little research on geraniums before starting this block and found there are 422 species. It's no wonder they all look a little different. They are usually seen in warm colors and their leaves are very unique making them easy to identify. Mum took a couple of photos of her plants while they were flowering.
Nine Months of Flowers
Nine months of my flower blocks are complete. Have you seen them all?
Friday Flower Helenium
Helenium is not a common flower to me, but I love the shape of its petals. The flowers are usually yellow or orange. As I was doing some research on it and found out it is also known as sneeze weed. I found this fabulous photo on the wikipedia.
