Friday Flower Sunflower
This week's flower is a sunflower. I based my sunflower block on my top selling pattern "Simply Sunflowers".
May Flowers
The saying goes "April's showers bring May flowers", well for the northern hemisphere that is true. Maybe not so much in the southern hemisphere where autumn is changing into winter. With the early snowfalls, the only way to brighten one's home is to make some applique flowers instead.
Friday Flower Dianthus
Dianthus is this week's flower. Common names for Dianthus are pinks, carnations and sweet william. All names I'm sure you have heard before. As you can probably guess by the name "pink" dianthus mostly come in shades of pink. They can also be white, yellow and red.
Friday Flower Calla Lily
Calla Lilies are very unique in their shape and are quite different to many flowers I have seen. This is one of the reasons I am very fond of them. I made a full quilt of Calla Lilies a few years ago called "Light Upon the Earth" and wrote a blog post about their creation too.
Friday Flower Gladiolus
Gladiolus is the birth flower for August - no wonder it is a favorite of mine. Flower colors may be green, white, mauve, yellow, red, orange, purple or pink, with stripes or blotches of another color.
Friday Flower Clematis
For the first flower of May I have a Clematis. The clematis is a climbing plant and their display is elegant. Most varieties produce a single flower however some have a double flower. The single flower can range from as small as 1" and up to 10". I haven't seen one that big but I'm sure it would be real pretty. I have seen quite a few different varieties though. The flowers are usually pastel shades of pink and purple or white but sometimes they can be brighter colors too.
Friday Flower Iris
Friday again and another flower is produced. This week I have made an iris. An iris is a wonderful garden plant that comes most commonly in many different shades of purples but other colors as well. The name Iris means rainbow so it speaks for itself. I have captured a few different iris flowers to show.
Friday Flower Fuchsia
Fuchsias are my very favorite flowers. They grow on shrubs or small trees and there is over 100 recognized species around the world. An unusual genus in New Zealand (named Kotukutuku - don't ask me how to say that!) grows on a tree 12-15 meters high (39-49 feet).
Friday Flower Daffodil
Today's flower block is another spring flower. Daffodil flowers are trumpet-shaped set on a star arrangement of petals. They come in shades of yellow and white. Usually the trumpet is a different shade than the petals. I love seeing these flowers in spring. It is a sure sign that warmer weather is upon us.
Friday Flower Tulip
With spring just around the corner in the northern hemisphere I thought this flower was an obvious choice. According to my reading online tulips are the most popular spring flowers of all time and the third most popular over all after roses and chrysanthemums. An even more interesting fact about tulips is apparently the bulb is a good replacement for onions in cooking - a little expensive I would say, but I guess if you cannot get to the store, then maybe a good solution.
