I've Been Practicing

After 25 years of using my faithful Bernina sewing machine, I finally splurged out and bought a new one. Being familiar with computers it wasn't too difficult to find my way around but I had my manual at the ready. There are a number of new features that I'm not familiar so some learning will be needed for sure.

In the meantime, I definitely had to check out the free-motion because you all know that's what I love best. I grabbed whatever was at hand, which happened to be my poppy block (the pattern I offer free on my website) and started stippling the background.

This was fun and it reminded me why I prefer the vertical thread stand over the horizontal one! I also added another quilting line around the quilted poppies so they now have a double line. Here's how the block looks now.

Why did I buy another Bernina? You just cannot beat Berninas for free-motion and this one hasn't let me down, as I knew it wouldn't! .... and even though there are a lot of new features I'm so pleased they have continued two of my very favorite - the heel press feature (so you can lift or drop the needle with your heel) and the knee lift lever (to lift the presser foot with your knee). Both mean I don't have to move my hands away from my project as I work and still do these actions. One of the new features I adore is the size of the bobbin. It is 70% larger than my old one. Check this out! The new bobbin is on the left and means I can sew a great deal longer before it runs out - love it!

So coming up, my plan is to do some more practicing of different quilting techniques to which I will video and add to my Machine Quilting workshop. This is an on-demand workshop so those who are already enrolled will be notified when videos are added and for those who aren't, you can find out more about it at Academyofquilting.com - Machine Quilting

In the meantime, if you don't already have a copy of my Poppy pattern shown above, you can get it free by signing up below (if you have, please share this page with your friends) and I'll go back to practicing and learning the new features of my machine.

Happy Quilting!

  • Hi Josee, I hope you're enjoying your Bernina. Yes there are lots of different functions. My class is all about quilting in general, not focused on any brand of machine but I can certainly share lots of tips and helpful suggestions for using your Bernina for quilting. What model do you have?
